Colombia launches digital nomad visa

By Moustafa Daly

With remote working becoming the norm for millions across the world, many countries are attempting to attract high-earning foreign workers to their economies with immigration-friendly policies.

Colombia just became the latest country to do so by launching its own digital nomad visa.

The criteria for successful applications include proof of income in the three months prior to application, with a demonstrated minimum monthly income of $750. Entrepreneurs qualify for the visa without a minimum income requirement, but they need to produce a motivational letter outlying their business plans and an explanation for choosing Colombia as their base– however golden visa holders aren’t allowed to work in the country.

The visa is initially valid for a period of two years. It allows its holders to stay in Colombia for up to six months a year. All applicants must have a comprehensive health insurance policy valid in the country.

“Colombia is thrilled to share with digital nomads the privilege of working from the second most bio diverse country in the world,” said Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia, part of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Tourism, in a statement.

“Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, Cali, the Coffee Landscape, and other destinations offer a variety of coworking spaces and accommodations with specific programs developed for more extended stays where remote workers will have unforgettable experiences,” she added.

Colombia's digital nomad visa program mandates that individuals operating as digital nomads within its borders offer telecommuting services only to foreign corporations through online channels, or establish an independent digital content or IT firm of interest and significance to the local economy.

Applicants may elect to include dependents in their visa applications.

South America offers several digital nomad visa options

Colombia is the latest country to offer digital nomad visa in South America, but not the only one. Brazil, the largest country on the continent, launched its digital nomad visa in January 2022, with minimum income requirements being $1500 or savings amounting to $18,000.

Ecuador is another country issuing digital nomad visas, with minimum income being $1350 while each dependent requires an extra $250 in income.

Reportedly, Argentina is also en route to offer its own digital nomad visa, however details are yet to be released.

The developments come within a wider global trend of easing visa restrictions for foreign talent and potential investors. Countries from South East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, are shifting their policies to accommodate and attract digital nomads to work within their territories.
