Canada will carry out a new lottery process on Sept. 20 this year to randomly select 30,000 immigrant applicants, including permanent residents for allowing them to sponsor their parents and grandparents.
The Canadian immigration minister announced the new lottery process for the Parents and Grandparents Program 2021 at a press conference on July 21.
The lottery will be held from among applicants who had already applied for the program between October and November 2020. The lottery itself will be held in the week of Sept. 20 while selected applicants will get invitations in the following two weeks. Eligible applicants must be Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
Applicants also must prove they have enough financial means to support all their dependent relatives. They would also have to sign a declaration that they would be able to financially support their relatives for 20 years at least. The Canadian province of Quebec has more stringent requirements, including providing proof that the main applicant had sufficient means for at least 12 months prior to supporting the dependent family members.
Applicants would also need to have a clean criminal record and loan credit history.
Earlier this year, Canada had made a similar process, which allowed 10,000 permanent residents and citizens to sponsor their parents and grandparents in the country. The new lottery process for the selection of 30,000 applicants due in September would be on top of the ones already selected in January 2021.
Parents and grandparents of the applicants who enter Canada via this new lottery process would first be granted permanent residency, making them eligible for full healthcare and the right to work. Later on, they would also become eligible for Canadian citizenship.
