Lawrence Hu is a cross-border specialist with Jingtian & Gongcheng law firm. He is experienced in outbound investor representation, corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, litigation and compliance, international tax, and healthcare. Hu advises multinational companies on operations, investments, and finances, and he works with high net worth individuals on asset planning.

Before joining Jingtian & Gongcheng, Hu worked for Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court, Ping’an Investment Bank, Richard & Co., and MWE China Law Offices, for more than 15 years. While working for Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court as a judge clerk/assistant, Hu participated in about 200 trials, covering intellectual property right infringements and contract, real estate, and personal injury disputes.

Hu’s knowledge of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) anti-bribery and corruption rules and the Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry helps him when advising international companies.

Some of Hu’s notable law cases include representing Walmart in resolving tax issues the company inherited in the acquisition of Trust-Mart, which involved communication with 107 stores in 29 cities and nearly 20 tax authorities throughout China.

Hu represented Mars, Inc. in the integration of its global IT resources after its acquisition of the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company and Royal Canin. He also advised the company in restructuring its business model, which involved 36 branch companies or branch offices throughout China.

Hu also represented McDonald’s in its self-investigation required by the State Administration of Taxation, and he represented MTS Systems Corp. in tax matters resulting from its acquisition of the SANS Group.

Hu has two Masters of Laws (LL.M) degrees, one from the University of Virginia and the other from East China University of Political Science and Law. He earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the Tax College of Yangzhou University. He is a member of the PRC Bar. Hu speaks Mandarin and English.
