All residence visas for Portugal are subject to the analysis of the criminal antecedents of the applicant. The permit shall be denied if the applicant has been convicted of a crime that, in Portugal, is punishable with a prison sentence of more than one year, even if this has not been served or its execution has been suspended.

Can a 32-year old prison conviction affect a D7 visa request?
My husband has a conviction from 32 years ago, and served 10 years in prison. Will his D7 visa for Portugal request be denied? Will they overlook it since it's been 32 years since its origination?

Getting a Visa in Portugal with a criminal record depends on the nature of the offense and how it's penalized in Portugal. If the offense could potentially carry a sentence in Portugal, which is longer than a year, your husband won't be able to obtain the Visa.

In accordance with Portuguese Law, a necessary requirement to obtain a temporary residence permit (being D7 Visa one of them) is not having been convicted for a crime punished in Portugal with prison for more than 1 year. Nonetheless, there is the possibility to request local authorities to remove the criminal information from the record due to the time that passed since the criminal event, which is advisable.
