Criminal record and gaining dual citizenship in Portugal

I was charged with petty theft (under $25) when I was 19. I paid a small fine. I have not had any additional convictions and my record has been sealed. I have created a successful life for myself. However, I’ve read that this crime is punishable for up to 3 years in Portugal. Will that prevent me for applying for dual citizenship? I married a Portuguese national and would like to get dual citizenship. But I'm afraid I could be denied because of this past mistake.

To become a Portuguese citizen through marriage, you must not have been convicted of a crime punishable by a prison sentence of 3 years or more in Portugal. Since the theft crime has a maximum penalty of up to 3 years, you will probably not encounter any issues with your application. However, it will be best to consult with a lawyer to analyze your specific situation.
