Does a parent’s Cyprus resident permit allow his children to attend Cypriot schools?

I am moving my family of two young children – 8 and 10 – to Cyprus using the resident permit. Can they attend local schools? Do they have to go to a private or international school? Is any English used at the schools?

The children can go to the public schools or their parents may choose to send them in private international schools that exist in a big number in Cyprus. As English is one of the official languages of the Republic of Cyprus, both public and private schools offer extensive lessons of the language.

There is no restriction for your children attending Cypriot local (public) schools. The teaching language in Cypriot public schools is Greek. English is also taught from the first grade. There are numerous private schools in Cyprus whose teaching language is English and they follow the British curriculum.

The right for education, which is ensured by Article 20 of the Constitution of Cyprus, is not limited to the citizens of the republic, but it also covers children of persons who acquired a resident permit in Cyprus. Parents are able to register their children at a school within their educational region, independently of whether they are foreigners or not. Consequently, the right for education is guaranteed by the constitution of the republic of Cyprus and therefore all students can register in public schools, depending on their place of stay. As to your concerns regarding the language used in public schools, please note that they use the Greek language. You can contact directly the Cyprus Ministry of Education for any further information. On the other side, please be informed that private schools in Cyprus teach in the English language.

Your minor children will also acquire a resident permit, which indeed gives them access to the national education system that is free. However, the language of teaching is Greek, whereas English is taught as a foreign language. Should they wish to receive their education in English, there are numerous private schools which offer such at very competitive rates compared to private schools abroad.

With regards to your questions, please note that provided you have a resident permit, your children may either attend the private school or the public school, depending on your preference. The difference between the two schools are mainly the following: public schools and private schools. Public schools are offered for free and the lessons are taught in the Greek language. However, among the various lessons taught, children have also English classes. Private schools also exist in Cyprus and each requires its tuition fees to be paid. The languages taught in most private schools are either English or Greek, depending on what you opt for. Many foreigners choose to send their children to private schools given the fact that you have the English language as an option for studying. In addition to the above, there are also many after-school institutions for children of all ages who wish to attend same, in order to have additional lessons or perhaps even to have private lessons for any foreign language or any other lesson which is taught at school. These are considered as helpful lessons in order to improve and help the children’s performance at school.
