You will need to remain in Cyprus for seven years in order to do that. But you may be eligible to apply for citizenship by virtue of staying in Cyprus.

No. Cyprus citizenship can be acquired in three ways: working seven straight years in Cyprus; getting married to a Cyprus citizen for more than five more years before a citizenship application; investing 2.15 million or 2.65 million (plus expenses) via the Cyprus Investment Program, which requires simultaneously subscription to Cyprus EU permanent residency.

The six-month residency criteria is mandatory for an application for citizenship under the Cyprus Investment Program. Whether you hold a permanent resident permit or a work permit, it does not matter. You just need to show that you are a holder of a residence permit in Cyprus. Permanent residency which is granted exceptionally to applicants that will eventually apply for citizenship under the Cyprus Investment Program is issued only when you file also the application for citizenship. This is granted by the government so that to assist those applicants that cannot stay in Cyprus for a period of six months (which is the case of other resident permit holders). In general, there are two ways to apply for passport: either by naturalization, meaning that you need to stay in Cyprus for 7 years, or by making an investment in the island and filing an application for citizenship under the Cyprus Investment Program.
