How can I get a U.S. tourist visa visa with a criminal record?

I'm a UK citizen. Would I be able to get a tourist visa to the U.S. if I have a criminal record from 38 years ago for carrying a loaded air pistol in a public place and assault causing bodily harm (ABH)? I paid a fine and have never been in trouble since. My wife wants to visit America now, but I don't know if I am allowed.
