How can I adjust my status from a tourist to a student visa holder while staying in Germany?

Can I file an application for a student visa while I am staying in Germany as a tourist visa holder? Do I have to leave the country?

The German Residence Act does not provide for the possibility of changing from a visa for tourist purposes to a visa for study. The possibilities of a so-called change of purpose - from tourist to student - are very limited by law. This does not include the beginning of studies. Therefore, we recommend that you leave the country after the expiry of your tourist visa and apply for a new visa for study purposes. In this new visa, certain information must be provided and documents must be presented to confirm the purpose.
