You do not need to live in Italy to apply for citizenship by marriage.

How can I obtain Italian citizenship through my partner’s ancestry?
My partner has an Italian ancestor from his mother’s side. His grandparents left Italy in the 1950s and didn’t return nor did they register him as a citizen. He is now working on getting his Italian citizenship. Once he does that, would I be able to also be an Italian citizen as his spouse if we don’t intend to live there? Or is living in the country a condition?

Italian citizenship can be acquired also through marriage with an Italian citizen. The application can be filed after 3 years of marriage if outside Italy or 2 years in case of residency in Italy (both terms can be reduced to half in case the couple has children minors of age).
