How can I remain in Europe after I complete my Master's degree?

I plan to apply for a Master's degree next year, and I'm considering Germany, Portugal, or Spain. Depending on the program I choose, I intend to start the recognition of skills and qualifications process. My goal is to continue working in Europe after I graduate. I'm thinking of obtaining a digital nomad visa to stay after completing my Master's and then applying for permanent residency. I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

As we are only currently working in Portugal, my answer will be more focused on the Portuguese Law and the Portuguese Immigration processes. With this in mind, and assuming you are still outside of Portugal in your country of residence, you can apply for a student visa in the Portuguese Consulate of that country. You can then convert your student visa into a student residence permit, however, keep in mind that this residence permit would only be valid for 3 years, or for the duration of the study program, in case it is shorter than 3 years. After this you are allowed, as a graduate from a Portuguese institution, to stay in Portugal for a period of 1 year to get a job, or to start a company in Portugal. Given this, after you complete your Master’s Degree, you can stay in Portugal for a period of up to one year, when you’ll be able to request the Work Residence Permit, since you stated that’s your wish, without the need to go back to your country of origin to request a Visa for this purpose at the Consulate. Additionally, if you intend to apply for permanent residence in the future, after legally residing in Portugal for 5 years, whether on a work residence permit, a student residence permit, or a combination of these legal statuses, you can apply for permanent residency. After that period, you may also be interested in obtaining Portuguese citizenship too.

Thank you for your question. I’d be happy to provide some insights on remaining in Europe after completing your Master's degree. If you are considering Germany, Portugal, or Spain, each country offers different pathways to remain and work after your studies. Here are some options based on your goals: 1. *Germany*: After completing your Master's degree in Germany, you can apply for an 18-month residence permit to search for a job related to your field of study. Once you find employment, you can switch to an EU Blue Card or a work visa, which could eventually lead to permanent residency. 2. *Portugal*: In Portugal, students who finish their degree may stay for up to 12 months to look for work or start a business. Similar to Germany, you would need to transition to a work visa or a residence permit for highly qualified professionals once you secure employment. 3. *Spain*: Spain also allows graduates to apply for a "job search" residence permit for up to 12 months after graduation. Once you have secured a job, you could apply for a work visa, and after a few years, you may be eligible for permanent residency. Regarding the *digital nomad visa* you mentioned, it's a good option for staying in Europe if you plan to work remotely. However, these visas typically have specific requirements, such as proof of remote employment or freelance work, and may not directly lead to permanent residency. If your long-term goal is to settle in Europe, securing a work contract post-graduation and transitioning to a residency permit would be a more straightforward path. Let me know if you need further information on any specific country or visa option. I’d be happy to assist!
