How can I stay in Italy for about a year until the digital nomad visa becomes available?

I’m a digital nomad from the US, currently living in Bali but considering moving to Italy to live for about six months to a year. I don’t intend to live there beyond a year, and I believe the digital nomad visa is not active yet. How can I stay in Italy for that long without such an arrangement?

The Italian digital nomad and remote workers visa is not active yet. Should you want to temporarily move to Italy for up to a year, you may evaluate applying for a free-lance visa or, if you are willing to study, a study/formation visa.
