STEM is definitely the current trend in what Australia would like to receive. However, if there are other niches in the field that makes you employable and recognized by another eligible person is willing to nominate you for a respectable placement in Australia. A list of desirable talents is published online, but if you have transferable projects and ventures, there is no reason why those could not be attempted.

How do I know which Australian talent visa is the right one for me?
I have been recognized as a leader in the business field by several local awards. Would that qualify me to apply for Australia's Global Talent Stream or the Distinguished Talent Stream? Or are these specific to those in science and research fields?

First, do note the Distinguished Talent visa has been renamed to the Global Talent visa (subclass 858). In addition we have the priority Global Talent Independent scheme (which uses the same Global Talent visa but has higher quota and faster processing). Generally, local awards are not likely to be sufficient. The record of achievement must be exceptional and outstanding and you must have an international recognized. This would generally involve international activities; however, it is possible to be based upon activities only in your home country that are in a field that is recognized and undertaken in a number of countries and your achievements would be similarly recognized in relation to international and Australian standards.Where available the Global Talent Independent stream is preferred because the visa processing time is typically around three months and the planning level is for 15,000 places. The Global Talent (without the priority) is likely to be three years or more and there are only 200 places. To qualify for the Global Talent Independent, you will additionally need to demonstrate your record of achievement is in one of the relevant sectors of resources, agri-food and AgTech, energy, health industries, defense/advanced manufacturing/space, circular economy, digi-tech, infrastructure and tourism, financial services and fintech, or education. In addition, evidence of the capability to earn the fair work high income threshold in Australia is required, this is currently 158,500 Australian dollars.

The Global Talent Independent visa is the buzzword now for Australian migration with 15,000 allocated places in the 2021/22 quota. Australia aims to attract the best and the brightest from earmarked industries such as those in STEM industries to boost the Australian economy. The other targeted industries are advanced manufacturing, financial services (Fintech), health and life sciences, agricultural technology, education, digi-tech, infrastructure and tourism, etc. If you have been identified as a leader in the business field with awards locally, it is usually not going to be considered sufficiently outstanding as you need international recognition for this visa. However, if you have awards given for an industry that you specialize in and the technology/product are part of the identified sectors and is currently being widely used or adopted overseas via a franchise or patent, you could possibly be considered as developing an idea/concept that is internationally recognized and economically beneficial to international markets. You must also have an Australian nominator (individual, organisation. peak body, university) who has national recognition in the same field as yours, and be able to demonstrate a capacity to earn a high income threshold of minimum 158,500 Australian dollars.
