How does Portugal process civil unions in Golden Visa applications?

How can I apply for the golden visa with my same-sex partner as a dependent, given we’re in a civil union and not married?

If your state / country of residency recognizes the civil partnership, you can get it recognized there and it will be eligible here in Portugal. You and your partner must have been together for at least 3 years.

There are no restrictions whatsoever for same-sex couples to apply for the Golden Visa program in Portugal. For the longest time Portugal has increased rights for same-sex relationships, be it by marriage or civil partnership, internationally being praised as one of the most progressive countries in this regard. As such, when applying for the Golden Visa program, you’ll just be required to provide proof of your civil partnership in order to submit your application. From the many cases we’ve dealt with regarding same-sex relationships up to this date, we have never had any other decision than acceptance by the authorities, proving that Portugal welcomes and is supportive of cases such as yours.

We note that there is no limitation to family reunification for same-sex couples. If the couple is not married, they must live in a civil union according to Portuguese law, i.e., a civil union is only recognized in Portugal when the couple lives together for at least 2 years. In this sense, if you have lived together for more than 2 years and can prove it, you can reunite your partner in your Golden Visa process.
