There is a specific status for lawyers to work in Japan. The "legal services" visa status can be applied only after an approval has been given to the foreign lawyer by the Ministry of Justice, followed by a registration at the bar association. If you have been hired by a law office in Japan, you may be able to apply for another type of work visa first and later change your status in Japan to legal services upon your registration.
