Is residency or citizenship a better option to buy property in Italy?

I am a second-generation Italian immigrant. I've never applied for Italian citizenship as I don't have plans to relocate there. However, my family and I often visit Italy to see my mother's relatives, and I intend to purchase our family's villa there. I just found out that there's a visa available for non-EU Family Members of an Italian or EU Citizen Residing in Italy. Would this visa allow me to buy property, or should I consider obtaining citizenship instead, regardless if it's a rather longer process?

    Buying a property in Italy does not require you to have Italian citizenship or neither a visa nor residence permit; as long as you comply with the rules for short-term stays, you could purchase a real estate in Italy without the need to apply for a long-term visa or citizenship.

    If you are a US citizen, to purchase a property, you do not need any visas, but you can stay in Italy + Schengen area max. 90 days and 180 days period. I read that you are second generation Italian, and most likely, you can obtain Italian citizenship; if you obtain it, you could stay in Italy as long as you wish, taking into account, however, possible tax consequences if you stay more than 183 days/year.
