Can I have a side job on a 494 visa?

I am a pharmacist on a 494 visa and was thinking of using a few weekends to do some side work such as paid online surveys, mystery shopper tasks or online affiliate marketing. I am reluctant as I am not sure whether or not this will breach my visa conditions. Can I do this without breaching my visa?

When holding a 494 visa in Australia, you must only work in the occupation nominated in your 494 visa application.  You cannot work in a different occupation.  Further, you can only work for the business that nominated you or an associated entity. Thus, even working online for another Australian employer could breach the condition. If your employment with your sponsor ends, you can stop working or work outside of the above conditions for a limited time up to 180 days in a single period, within this period, you need to find a suitable employer who can sponsor you in the nominated occupation.

Short answer is no, you can't do other work. The Subclass 494 Employer Sponsored Regional visa has a condition 8608 that restricts "work" to the nominated occupation and employer only (in some cases an associated business of the employer can also be considered). Policy makes it very clear that other employment cannot be undertaken in Australia (unpaid voluntary work is excepted). The condition doesn't refer to "work in Australia", it refers to "work" which is broad and relate to any work activities when the holder is in Australia. (Work conducted when overseas is not limited).  For comparison the visitor visa subclass 600 stipulates no "work in Australia" but can allow remote work where the salary is paid from outside Australia.

On the 494 Visa, you are supposed to only work for the business that sponsored you. However, if your sponsor is an Australian business, you can work for that business or one of its associated entities as long as it is in regional Australia.
