Making an investment in Italian stock or startup companies can be the basis for obtaining an investor's visa, however, it does not lead directly to the possibility for getting an Italian citizenship. It is only after 10 years of legal residence in the country that a non-EU national with an investor's visa can file an application for obtaining Italian citizenship.

In Italy, it is possible to obtain residency, not citizenship, by different forms of investment. There are some agencies which advertise the possibility of acquiring citizenship by investing some funds, but this is wrong information and it is a fraud. Citizenship-by-naturalization can be applied for only after 10 years of residency.

Foreign investors have lots of advantages in making investments in Italian startups. They are exempted from paying annual fees to the Chambers of Commerce and other registration fees and duty stamps. Moreover, they can exploit the national innovation funds along with simplified access to the guarantee fund for small-and-medium enterprises. Investing in stock companies involves capital risks just like in every other country.
