Even though we don’t have enough information to fully ascertain the best possible solution for you, we would still advise – should the couple continue to work and if such work can be performed remotely – the visa for remote workers as being one of the best options for you. Should this be a situation where the couple is about to retire, then the best option would be for you to apply for a D7 Visa. Both visas will enable you to come and permanently reside in Portugal (minimum stay of 6 months per year is required), as well as access all public services (health, education, transportation) as any other citizen would.

What pathway should I select to migrate to Portugal?
We are an Indian couple working in Saudi Arabia for the past 10 years. Our combined income is around 3000 euros per month. We also have savings of about 40,000 euros in Indian banks. How can we migrate to Portugal? What would be our best option for a visa / residency permit under these circumstances?

There are several paths to migrate to Portugal. In case you intend to retire, D7 will be the best option. In case you intend to continue to work for your current employer, you have a new option of visa - the Digital Nomad Visa - however, the monthly income must be higher.

There are two residence options based on earned income, the D7 Visa, for those who receive passive income such as dividends, rents, interests, royalties or pensions, and the digital nomad / remote worker visa, for those who receive income earned through the performance of a professional activity, such as salary. In the first option, applicants have to provide evidence of receiving passive income in the minimum amount of €705 per month (value of the minimum salary, although it strengthens the application if applicants provide evidence of higher amounts per month, around €1,000). In the second option, applicants must provide evidence of receiving €2,820.00 per month. Both residence schemes oblige a residence in Portugal of at least 6 months per year, having a Portuguese account where the money is transferred, a Portuguese address, a clear criminal record and a health insurance.
