What visa options do digital nomads have in Portugal?

Do remote workers have to meet a minimum income threshold in order to qualify for temporary residence visas in Portugal allowing them to work for their global firms? Are the only options available to digital nomads the D2 and D7 visas?

By the end of 2022, Portugal introduced a remote workers/digital nomads visa, specifically for applicants who intend to work remotely from Portugal (employees and contractors) for foreign companies/entities. Therefore, this became most likely the most suitable option.

As digital nomadism is becoming an everyday larger reality worldwide, Portugal and its national authorities are welcoming and have created easier procedures for those who wish to apply for a residence permit under that premise. As such, the best way for you to accomplish this goal would be to apply for a residence visa under the D7 or the EU Blue Card. The D7 visa is meant for entrepreneurs and applicants who already have an income from their country of origin and is specific to highly qualified job positions, which are foreseen by the government. The EU Blue Card is a “mix” of a D2 Visa for dependent work and the D7 Visa, as it is meant for applicants who detain highly qualified job positions and are employed by a certain entity. Both the D7 and the EU Blue Card are dependent on your skills and your qualifications fulfilling the Portuguese Government’s criteria. Should they not, you will still be able to apply for a residence permit under the general rules (for example, the D2 Visa, which is meant for applicants who wish to come to Portugal to work, either for a certain entity (dependent work) or by creating their own job position (independent work incorporating a self-owned company in national territory, for example).

The D2 and D7 options are most suitable for digital nomads. The minimum income is 1,500 euros per month.

For remote workers, we usually suggest that the best visa for digital nomads is the D2 visa. Despite that, it depends on the country of residency, occupation and sources of income of the candidate.

D2, D3 and D7 are available options for digital nomads. From 2022, a minimum income of approximately 705 euros per month must be available for a single applicant.
