How can I work in Portugal on a D7 visa before I obtain my residency permit?

Will I be able to work for a Portuguese company once I receive a D7 visa? I'm asking specifically about the first few months before I receive the residency permit. Is it possible to work from day one? Will my employer be able to request a work permit for me to work during this initial period?

D7 visa leads to a residence permit that allows the holder to work in Portugal. As such, the right will exist from the moment the permit is granted. While waiting the employer shall be informed and might subject the promise of work to the conclusion of the process.

The D7 visa is also known as the Retirement or the Passive Income Visa. Its holders can come to Portugal and get a residence permit. This path is suitable for financially independent cosmopolitans who confirm a stable income, calculated based on the minimum salary in Portugal. In 2024, the minimum salary is €820, so the D7 visa applicant must demonstrate a yearly income of at least €9840. Typically, D7 visa applicants come to Portugal not to find a job or start a business but to live in a European country for as long as necessary to obtain citizenship.

There is no obstacle to working for a Portuguese company while holding a D7 visa. The D7 visa is a visa for obtaining residence in Portugal, designed for retired citizens or citizens with passive income, such as royalties, real estate income, among others. This visa was not designed for subordinated workers, but it also allows you to work in Portugal. If you want to work in Portugal, maybe you should be exploring other visas instead (i.e., D1 or D3).
