How does Australia’s bridging visa work?
We applied for the 188 Visa Offshore in May 2022 and are still waiting for the result. We applied for the business visitor visa in June 2022 and it got approved. We visited Australia in July 2022 on a Business Visitor Visa. If we travel to Australia on a visitor visa and apply for bridging visa A, will we get bridging visa A, or will it be rejected?

You cannot apply for a bridging visa A associated to your subclass 188 visa unless you had applied for your 188 visa while previously onshore while holding a valid substantive visa. The bridging visa associated to your subclass 188 visa application is only granted to those who had made a 188 onshore application while holding another substantive visa (i.e.: a visitor visa). If you had applied for your subclass 188 visa while offshore, then you will not be eligible for the grant of any bridging visa A.

First, you must check the conditions attached to the current visitor subclass 600 visa. If the visitor visa has conditions such as 8503 “Not further stay”, one cannot apply for any visa in Australia except humanitarian visas. Bridge visa A is granted for applicants who held a substantive visa in Australia, applying for another substantive visa in Australia. Often Bridge visa A is granted automatically when the applicant in Australia makes an application for a Substantive visa when residing in Australia. If the substantive visa application such as subclass 188 visa are made overseas quite a long time ago, and presently on a visitor visa for a purely temporary purpose, the eligibility requirements for granting bridge Visa A might not be satisfied. In such cases, the applicant can apply for another 600 visa in accordance with the currently held visa conditions.
