I am a U.K. citizen married to a Greek-Cypriot national (Cypriot passport) residing in the UK. We are a same-sex couple who have been married for 3 years and planning to settle in Cyprus. After 3 years of marriage to a Cypriot citizen residing abroad, a UK spouse can apply for a Cypriot citizenship. As the same-sex marriages are not recognized in Cyprus (only civil partnerships), can I still apply for the passport on the basis that we got married before the UK officially left the EU block, and as part of EU, Cyprus should be recognizing same-sex marriages and grant citizenship to Cypriot spouses?
The migration law, unfortunately, in Cyprus does not recognize same-sex marriages enabling Cyprus national to give the citizenship earlier (5 years of residency in Cyprus) to the spouse. The only other way for the individual to obtain the citizenship is to live in Cyprus for seven years (for at least 183 days and one additional year for 365 days).
