How can I stay in Australia after my 485 visa expires?

After graduating from my cooking course, I work as a chef on a 485 visa. If I open a company in Australia and start importing goods from Turkey to Australia, is it possible for me to stay after my 485 visa expires? Also, is it possible for me to bring my shareholders to Australia after a while?

Subclass 485 isn't a staged process to permanent residence by itself. Its intention is to allow the applicant to remain in Australia, obtain work experience, and qualify for more permanent pathways. General Skilled visas (Subclass 189, 190, 491) require a migration skill assessment. This is usually based upon qualifications, or qualifications and work experience (often this is 1 year for students who have a relevant qualification in Australia). It is important to understand the requirements for your occupation skill assessment. The pathways are usually: 1. Skilled Independent Subclass 189 - This is competitive based upon points and focused on high demand occupations. 2. Skilled Nominated Subclass 190 - Similar to the Subclass 189 but requires state/territory nomination. Some states/territories have pathways for graduates, or give priority to applicants who are living or working in the state/territory. It is important to understand what requirements apply for the state/territory where you studied and/or are residing in. 3. Skilled Regional Subclass 491 - Similar to 190 in requiring state/territory nomination. Generally more places available for this program however it is a 2 stage pathway to permanent residence (minimum 3 years on temporary subclass 491 followed by permanent residence under subclass 191). 4. Temporary Skill Shortage Subclass 482 - This is an employer sponsored visa. The current requirements include 2 years of relevant work experience however this will be reduced to 1 year from November 2024. With employer nomination, the applicant can apply for permanent residence (subclass 186) after 2 years. It is critical to get advice from a registered migration agent to understand your options and requirements while you still have time under the subclass 485 to implement a successful strategy to apply for permanent residence.

The simple answer is no. Presently, Australia has permanently paused the investment visas. The best option for a 485 visa holder is to get an employer-sponsored skilled-based visa based on your qualifications and work experience.
