My uncle is a citizen of Malta. I want to become a citizen as a well and use the residency requirement by staying at his home. Can I establish residency in this method, without paying him rent (as he doesn’t wish to charge me)?
You can use your uncle's address for the residency stage until you receive a letter of approval in principle. You need to rent a property for a minimum of 12,000/16,000 euros, or buy a property with a minimum value of 350,000/280,000 euros for the next five years.
One of the requirements of the program is for the applicant to either acquire immovable property worth 360,000 or to take on immovable property on lease for an annual rent of not less than 16,000. In both cases the property is to be held for at least five years. Therefore, you would need to satisfy either of the above requirements, irrespective of whether you will be living with your uncle or not.
In order to be able to qualify for the Maltese citizenship by investment programme, the applicant must either hold a qualifying residential property under his own name by the title of ownership and having a minimum value of 350,000 euros or take on a lease of residential immovable property for a minimum annual rent of 16,000 euros. Once the initial letter of approval has been issued, the aspiring applicant must abide by these regulations to be able to proceed with the application for citizenship.
