First and foremost is registration, which is a long, complex and difficult process. If/when you obtain registration via the Medical Council then you would need an adequate job offer. And you could apply for a work visa since the residence program has been suspended and it will remain suspended for another three-to-four months. However, health workers can apply for work visas, but while NZ border is closed request for exception needs to be applied for first. Regards Aleks

How can foreign doctors apply for permanent residency in New Zealand during the pandemic?
I'm an experienced doctor in my 40s from India and I want to move permanently with my family to New Zealand. What options would you advise me given the rumor that visa-processing for healthcare-related jobs remains open?

For any essential skills work or critical work, including healthcare, a key aspect is that there must be a New Zealand-based employer who supports the visa application.

Coming to work in NZ is one option as a pathway to residency. Most of the healthcare occupations in NZ require registrations. And, yes, visa applications for essential workers are still open. The other option would be to study for another healthcare qualification in NZ to gain post-study work rights in NZ. As you are an experienced healthcare practitioner, it should be reasonably easy for you to find a skilled job and apply for resident visa under the Skilled Migrant category. A third option is to consider investing in NZ. The minimum amount required is $3,million. You'd have to prove how the fund is legally earned, including any assets you may wish to liquidate.
