How can investors take advantage of Italy's so called 2-euro house deals?

Can one buy such low-priced houses in rural Italy and become eligible for residency by investment? What would the investment immigration process be like if American investors like us go down this route?

The Italian Investor Visa Program is based on investment in the corporates capital of Italian companies, innovative start-ups, government bonds or philanthropic projects (with minimum thresholds from 250,000 euros up to 2,000,000 depending on the type of investment target). As of now, there is no direct way to invest in the purchase of a real-estate property in Italy to be granted a visa and residence permit. You may consider the elective residence visa route, which is not based on an investment per se, but on the availability of housing in Italy and sufficient financial resources of the applicant to support themselves during their stay in Italy without carrying out any kind of work activity.
