Investors have three options with the reforestation visa: The first one is temporary residency by investing $80,000; you get residency for six years (by extending every two year). The second one is permanent residency by investing $100,000; this is valid for two years, then you apply for the permanent residency. The third one is permanent residency by investing $350,000; Panama will grant you permanent residency (without waiting for two years) if you invest this amount. For the residency to be valid, you have to maintain the investment for a minimum period of five years, otherwise it will be cancelled. There is a requirement to annually present a certificate by the reforestation company that the investment is being maintained; and a certificate is issued by the competent authority of the existence of said company. There is no requisite in regards to the total area of the plot of land. Currently, there are no other residency options that relate to the environment. In regards to a return in full of the invested sum, keep in mind that gain of the investment is the residency permit.

How can investors take advantage of the Panama's Reforestation Visa?
I want to understand how the Reforestation visa works. Would my investment used for getting residency via this route be returned to me in full after a few years? What other environment related investment opportunities exist?

In order to apply under the reforestation residency program, $100,000 will suffice; no previous experience is required given that both, the investment and application process are handled by the professionals involved. This residency program grants first a two-year permit, which may later be upgraded to a permanent one; however, if the applicant invests $350,000 instead, permanent residency will be granted with the first application. How ROI may be guaranteed would be better explained by the companies managing these type of reforested plots.

The forestry visa is a government program where you can obtain Panama residency from the immigration agency by investing in a regulated forestry program. The investment is yours to keep and depends on the economic options granted by the forestry company.
