What constitutes investment in a research activity for purposes of the Portugal Golden Visa?
My husband and I are from Beijing and have been looking at the Portugal Golden Visa program. We would greatly enjoy easier access to Europe. We noticed that the investment in a research activity was less expensive than some of the other options. What constitutes an investment in a research activity? How can we identify such investments?

The investment in a research activity for purposes of the Portuguese Golden Visa is an option of investment that requests a minimum investment of 350,000 euros in research activities conducted by public or private scientific research institutions involved in the national scientific or technological system. It works more or less as a patronage, although some return may be negotiated in the case of patents and royalties. The national scientific or technological system here is defined as the set of national scientific and technological resources - human, financial and institutional - as well as activities involving the creation, dissemination and application of new knowledge. The system is recognized as an instrument whose vitality depends to a large extent on the development of the country. The institutions that exist in the national scientific or technological system are the following: state laboratories, other public research institutions and private research institutions. The best way to find such institutions is through the universities, depending on the area where the investor would like to invest, or through the Foundation for Science and Technology, which is the national public agency to support science, technology and innovation research in all areas of knowledge. It is sponsored by the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.
