Portugal’s Investment Fund Route Sustains Golden Visa Interest

The Portuguese Golden Visa is still very much alive and open for business, with its investment fund option showing strong, steady growth.

Despite the permanent closure of the traditional real estate pathway, international investors have rapidly pivoted to the fund route.

According to the Portuguese Association of Investment Funds, Pensions and Assets (APFIPP), Golden Visa-eligible investment funds received €283 million in new subscriptions between January and May 2026 alone. This influx of capital heavily outpaced the €94.7 million in redemptions during the same period, demonstrating a healthy, growing market with nearly a 3-to-1 ratio of new investments to exits.

The pace of new capital inflows relative to outflows also indicates continued interest in the route, even as some investors exit, many of whom had committed capital in the 12 to 18 months leading up to proposed changes to the country’s Nationality Law.

€500,000 Fund Pathway Contributes to Overall Foreign Investment Hike

This fund growth is part of a much larger economic rebound for the country. Driven by this corporate momentum, total foreign direct investment (FDI) into Portugal reached €6.7 billion in the first six months of the year, completely reversing the net outflows recorded during the same period last year. Crucially, €6 billion of that total was funneled directly into the capital of Portuguese companies and corporate entities.

For prospective Portuguese golden visa applicants, this data shows that the program has successfully evolved from its historically famous real estate option in 2023.

When Portugal banned the property investment route, critics worried the program would collapse. The €283 million shows that international investors have accepted the fund route as a viable alternative.

To qualify under current golden visa regulations, investors must make a minimum investment of €500,000 into an eligible venture capital or private equity fund. These funds are legally required to deploy capital directly into that booming corporate equity sector rather than property.
