Bahrain Golden Residency Overview
The Bahrain Golden Residency is open to foreign nationals who qualify under one of four categories and receive permanent residency in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The program is open to professionals working in Bahrain, property owners, retirees, and talented individuals.
The primary investment-based route requires ownership of property with a total personal share value of at least BHD 130,000 (approx. US$345,000).
The permit is issued as permanent residency with no expiry and no minimum stay requirement. The main applicant can include a spouse, parents, and children, with no age limit on dependents.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must hold a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity, provide six months of bank statements, hold valid health insurance in Bahrain, and have no legal issues in the Kingdom. The application fee is BHD 5 (approx. US$13) per person, with a residency issuance fee of BHD 300 (approx. US$795) per person upon approval.
4 categories are available.
Property Owner Route
- Ownership of real estate in Bahrain with a total personal share value of at least BHD 130,000 (approx. US$345,000) at the time of purchase
- The threshold may be met through a single property or multiple properties combined, provided the applicant’s personal share value across all holdings meets or exceeds the minimum
- A clear copy of the property deed or deeds confirming the applicant’s ownership share is required
Professional Route

Retiree Route
Two pathways apply depending on residence status:

- Non-resident retirees: average monthly pension of at least BHD 4,000 (approx. US$10,624); no minimum period of prior Bahrain residency required
Talented Individual Route

- Applications under this category are subject to review and approval by a specialized talent committee.
- Supporting documentation, certifications, or portfolios evidencing the claimed talent or achievement are required.
Route to Citizenship
The Bahrain Golden Residency grants permanent residency status and does not carry a direct statutory pathway to Bahraini citizenship. Citizenship by naturalization is governed by the Bahraini Nationality Law of 1963 and is administered by the Ministry of Interior.
To be eligible for naturalization, non-Arab applicants must have resided legally and continuously in Bahrain for at least 25 years. Arab nationals may apply after 20 years of continuous legal residence. All applicants must demonstrate Arabic language proficiency, own registered property in Bahrain, be of good moral character, and be mentally competent.
A letter addressed to the King of Bahrain expressing the desire to obtain Bahraini nationality is required for the application. Approval is at the discretion of the King and the Ministry of Interior and is not guaranteed.
Bahrain does not permit dual nationality. Applicants who are naturalized as Bahraini citizens must relinquish all prior citizenships.
Mobility and Taxation
Mobility
Bahraini citizens can access approximately 87 destinations visa-free or visa-on-arrival, ranking 51st globally, including all GCC member states, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, and Turkey.
As a GCC member, Bahrain maintains visa-free and freedom-of-movement arrangements with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman, which Golden Residency holders would benefit from.
Tax
Bahrain imposes no personal income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, or tax on worldwide income for individuals. This applies to all residents regardless of nationality.
Corporate income tax does not apply in most sectors; the primary exception is oil and gas companies, which are subject to a separate tax regime.
Applicants should seek independent tax advice to assess any obligations in their country of origin, particularly where their home country taxes on a worldwide basis.
