Can Canadians apply for U.S. citizenship directly?

Can a Canadian citizen apply directly for U.S. citizenship, or do they need a green card first? What are the steps involved for Canadians who want to become U.S. citizens?

Except by birth or through a US parent, one must hold a green card before getting US citizenship. The steps involved will vary depending on the situation. It is worth noting that since December 2025, US citizens with any Canadian ancestor can apply for Canadian citizenship.
