I’m an American currently on a visitor visa in Japan and I now wish to convert my stay to a long term one. What are my options? Could I invest in a business or some real estate or some company?

They need to file an application for certificates of eligibility of their
long term residency visa status if they want to stay with such a status. Each status has requirements on individual background and business in Japan. It is not allowed to change status in Japan from short-term visitor visa unless they have special humanitarian grounds or certificates of eligibility.
