I read that some documents must only be recent. How recent? Does it depend on the documents?

Usually the documents should not be more than six months old.
Criminal records, as well as marriage certificates, should be less than six months old at the moment of submitting a residency application.
As a general rule, all documents must have been issued within six months at the time of filing the residency application with the government office. There are some exceptions, such as the medical certificate issued in Panama (90 days), and police report from countries where it is stated an expiration date on the document (for example, 30 days or 60 days).
