I am preparing to invest in the New Zealand investor 2 resident visa. I have the required funds and assets ready in hand and have already come up with a portfolio in New Zealand. I learned that most of the time after the approval in principal, investors have up to 12 years to actually put money in the acceptable investment project. Can I invest early and shorten this process?

It is 12 months, not 12 years, that you have to invest your designated funds in acceptable NZ investment schemes.

12 months is the answer.
