I heard that proving the sustainability of the required income is the key to a successful ERV application. But according to the requirements of ERV, the income cannot come from a salary. What sources of income are acceptable for this kind of visa?

Some examples of passive income are: property rental income, pensions, social security benefits, corporate dividends and royalties. The visa applicant must show solid bank account(s) and a set monthly income. A single applicant must have a monthly income of minimum 2,596.60 euros.
